About

A focus space that asks nothing of you
The Inner Keep is a white noise and focus timer. Its name comes from a Stoic metaphor: no matter how loud the world gets, a person always has an "inner citadel" to retreat to. Sound here is not for escaping the world, but for stepping back into the small territory you can actually govern.
Why Stoic
A core Stoic principle is the "dichotomy of control" — some things are within our control, some are not. This principle is translated directly into the product's trade-offs: we only offer what you can control (sounds, volume, duration), and never design mechanisms that depend on psychological weaknesses you cannot fully control.
You have power over your judgment alone. — Epictetus
So there are no streak counters (they exploit loss aversion); no push notifications saying "you've been away for days" (they manipulate attention you can't fully govern); no leaderboards or social comparison (how long someone else focused is outside your control, and shouldn't be a source of your anxiety).
Principles built into the product
- Subtraction over addition. Before adding any feature, we ask whether it helps you stay in the present or makes choices for you and creates dependency. That's why there are no accounts, no cloud sync, no personalized recommendations.
- Time is scarce and respected. The timer is a core component, encouraging you to set a "finite" focus session rather than playing indefinitely. At the end, there is no "Great job! Streak complete!" — only a quiet sentence.
- Sound is acceptance, not escape. Sound names are plain and de-scenic ("Rain", "Fire", "White Noise") — no "Maldives Beach" fantasies — so you settle into here and now, not flee elsewhere.
- Honest language. No cuteness, no hype, no anxiety-manufacturing. Just facts and the next action.
How to use
Open the home page, layer two or three sounds, adjust volumes to a comfortable balance, set a finite duration (10 minutes, 25 minutes, or custom), and press start. A quote surfaces for a second and a half, sounds rise over two seconds, and you enter the session. At the end, sounds fade out, a closing line appears, and you leave with a clear head.
A tuned mix can be saved on this device — up to 5, with custom names. Switching devices will not sync — this is intentional, not a bug. We won't pretend there's a cloud account system.
